How it works
Your image is cropped to a centred square, then rendered at 16, 32, 180 and 192 pixels and encoded as PNG. The ICO file is assembled byte-by-byte in the page itself — it packs the 16 and 32 pixel versions into the classic Windows icon container, so old and new browsers alike find a size they like.
Why so many sizes? Browsers are picky in different ways: tabs want 16 or 32 pixels, phones saving your site to the home screen want the 180-pixel Apple touch icon, and Android wants 192. The snippet above wires all of them up, and the browser simply picks the best fit.
Limitation: tiny favicons are brutally honest about detail. Fine lines and small text that look crisp at 192 pixels turn to mush at 16 — if your logo is intricate, consider a simplified mark drawn for the small sizes rather than a straight shrink.
