How it works
The counting rules are deliberately simple and stated up front so there are no surprises:
- Words are whitespace-separated tokens — anything between spaces, tabs or line breaks.
- Characters counts every character including spaces; the second figure excludes all whitespace.
- Sentences are split on . ! ? — a fragment counts if it contains at least one letter or digit.
- Paragraphs are non-empty lines.
- Reading time is word count divided by the speed you picked.
One thing worth knowing: every app defines "word" a little differently. A hyphenated compound, a number with a comma, or an em dash can each count as one word here and two somewhere else. If you're writing to a strict limit in another program, treat this as a close guide rather than the final word.
