How it works
The image is decoded by your browser, painted onto a canvas, and re-encoded in the format you chose. Dimensions stay exactly the same — only the container and the compression change. WebP usually gives the smallest file for photos; PNG is the right pick when you need transparency or pixel-perfect edges like screenshots of text.
Two things worth knowing before you convert. First, JPEG has no transparency: if your source is a transparent PNG, the see-through areas are flattened onto a white background in the JPEG version. Second, an animated GIF becomes just its first frame — a canvas holds one still image, so the animation doesn't survive the trip.
Limitation: SVG files only convert if they carry their own width and height. An SVG without dimensions has nothing for the canvas to measure, and the conversion will fail — open it in an editor and set a size first.
